Why isn't there a cat in the zodiac?

The cat’s absence from the Chinese Zodiac is attributed to a trick played by the Rat, causing the cat to miss the race. However, cats still hold a significant place in Chinese culture. Revered for their grace and mystery, they symbolize good luck, prosperity, and protection against evil spirits. Many Chinese households consider cats as sources of positive energy, bringing joy and tranquility into their lives. Statues and figurines of cats, known as “lucky cats” or “fortune cats,” can be found in homes and businesses across China, believed to bring good fortune. Despite not being part of the Zodiac, cats continue to captivate and enchant people with their beauty and mystical qualities.

The Five Elements

A layer of Chinese astrology that is less well-known than the Chinese zodiac signs exists. Chinese astrologers use a 60-year cycle that consists of five sets of twelve signs. The five repeats of the signs, each of which corresponds to a different constituent, increase the animal’s complexity.

Metal, water, wood, fire, and earth are the five elements.

The elements in Chinese astrology are part of a cycle; one is not better or worse than the other. They do, in reality, have a cyclical relationship, both positive and negative, so that:

  • Water makes Wood
  • Wood makes Fire
  • Fire makes Earth
  • Earth makes Metal
  • Metal makes Water

and:

  • Water destroys Fire
  • Fire destroys Metal
  • Metal destroys Wood
  • Wood destroys Earth
  • Earth destroys Water

In addition, they can be openly aggressive and hostile.

  • Water resists Fire
  • Fire resists Metal
  • Metal resists Wood
  • Wood resists Earth
  • Earth resists Water

So now you know the basics of Chinese astrology. Enjoy exploring your Chinese sign!
